In short
Lent 2027 begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, and leads to Easter on March 28. The Church sees it as a season of conversion with three classic forms of penance: “fasting, prayer, and almsgiving” (CCC 1434). For a man who wants to be free of porn, it is a good frame: a few concrete resolutions, a plan for the hard evenings, and confession on the way to Easter.

What Lent is
Lent is the Church's preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and, under the liturgical norms, ends before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. The forty days are meant liturgically and in a biblical, symbolic sense, not as an exact count of calendar days. In 2027 that means:
| Day | Date |
|---|---|
| Ash Wednesday, Lent begins | Wednesday, February 10, 2027 |
| St. Joseph (solemnity) | Friday, March 19, 2027 |
| Palm Sunday, Holy Week begins | March 21, 2027 |
| Holy Thursday, Mass of the Lord's Supper | March 25, 2027 |
| Good Friday | March 26, 2027 |
| Easter Sunday | March 28, 2027 |
The Catechism calls Lent and every Friday “intense moments of the Church's penitential practice.” These times “are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and fraternal sharing” (CCC 1438).
Very little is actually required, and it is clearly defined. Church law sets fasting and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (Canon 1251). In the United States, the USCCB summarizes it this way: fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for ages 18 to 59, abstinence from meat on every Friday during Lent for ages 14 and up. Fasting means “one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.” The physically or mentally ill, including people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, are excused, as are pregnant or nursing women. Everything else you choose freely.
Why Lent is a good time to quit porn
For many men a new start is easier when it has a clear starting line. Lent has a clear first day, a clear end, and a whole Church trying the same thing at the same time. You are not setting out alone.
Then there is the content. Lent means conversion: turning away from what makes you small, toward God and toward other people. The Catechism names three forms for it that Scripture and the Church Fathers already knew: “fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, which express conversion in relation to oneself, to God, and to others” (CCC 1434). Jesus speaks about all three in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 6:1–18). That is exactly where porn attacks you: in how you relate to yourself, to God and to others.
One thing up front: quitting porn is not a voluntary sacrifice like giving up sweets, something you pick back up at Easter. It is the goal. Fasting, prayer and giving are the training that moves you toward it.
Prayer, fasting and almsgiving, made concrete
These are practical suggestions, not rules. Pick at most one from each row.
| Suggestion | Why it helps | |
|---|---|---|
| Prayer | Two minutes every morning before you look at your phone. Five minutes at night looking back on the day. | Your day does not start with a screen, and you can learn when things get hard. |
| Fasting | No phone in the bedroom. No social media after 10 p.m. Keep the Church's fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. | If you recognize certain places or times as risky, changing your habits there can help. |
| Almsgiving | Give a set amount. Spend one hour a week with someone who needs you. | Porn can isolate you and revolves around you. Giving can turn your eyes outward. |
Fasting can have a second use here. Some men find that when they choose to stay hungry for a while and notice the hunger come and go, they learn to handle an urge differently too: it does not have to decide anything right now.
Lenten resolutions that last
A resolution that is too big and too vague often does not last long. “I want to stay clean” is a wish, not a plan. An if-then sentence for the moment when things usually tip works better:
- “If I am alone on the couch at night and reach for my phone, I put it in the kitchen and go to bed.”
- “If I feel the urge coming after a bad day, I call my brother or go outside for ten minutes.”
- “If I notice on Sunday that the week was hard, I go to confession in the coming week.”
Write down your two or three sentences and put them where you will see them. Talk them through with someone you trust; more on that in Accountability partner. And plan confession in from the start: the Catechism says Lent is particularly suited to penitential liturgies (CCC 1438), and many parishes add extra confession times before Easter.
March 19 is the Solemnity of St. Joseph. In 2027 it falls on the Friday of the fifth week of Lent. It is a feast to enjoy, and a good day to ask St. Joseph for help with chastity. Prayers for that are on Chastity prayer to St. Joseph.
The first day
Make Ash Wednesday a real beginning. A suggestion for the day: go to Mass or a service where ashes are distributed. Keep the Church's fast. In the evening, take twenty minutes, write down your two or three if-then sentences, and set up right away what you decided: the charger in the kitchen, the block on your phone, the date with your friend. Whatever is already set up on the first night is something you do not have to decide on a tired night later.
If you fall during Lent
Lent is not a contest for the longest streak. If you fall, Lent is not lost and you do not start over at zero. The Catechism says chastity “has laws of growth which progress through stages marked by imperfection and too often by sin” (CCC 2343). A fall is serious, but it is not a verdict on you.
Get back up the same day. Look at what came before without beating yourself up: the time, the place, tiredness, loneliness. Tell someone. Put a confession time on your calendar. A plan for the first 24 hours is in Relapsed? What to do now
Together, not alone
For many men, what helps is less a better resolution than another man walking the same road. If you do not have one, ask in your parish, among friends or in a men's group. Consurgam is starting with a Lent cohort on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, and there is a waitlist for it.
Questions
When does Lent start in 2027?
On Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027. Lent ends before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, March 25. Then come Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday is March 28.
What are good Lenten resolutions for men?
Few and concrete: one for prayer (say, two minutes every morning), one for fasting (say, no phone in the bedroom), and one for giving (a set amount, or a set hour each week for someone else). Each one should be clear enough that you know at night whether you kept it.
What are the Lent fasting rules for Catholics in the US?
According to the USCCB, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting for Catholics ages 18 to 59, and every Friday in Lent is a day of abstinence from meat for those 14 and older. Fasting means one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal. People who are physically or mentally ill, including those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, are excused, as are pregnant or nursing women.
Can I give up porn for Lent?
Yes, but it is more than a Lenten sacrifice. Quitting porn is not a voluntary give-up like sweets that you take back at Easter. It is the actual goal of conversion, and it does not end on Easter Sunday. Lent helps with small practices of fasting, prayer and giving that train you toward that goal.
What if I break my Lenten resolution?
Get back up the same day. One fall does not make Lent worthless, and nothing resets to zero. Look at what came before without beating yourself up, tell someone you trust, and put a confession time on your calendar.
